AI Product Experiments

Natural Language Music Query

I run a website that hosts a database of UK chart history, which I often use to help create music quiz rounds. Examples include finding songs from a particular decade that share a common word in the title, or tracks that all reached the same chart position.

To simplify the search process, I wanted to explore how natural language interfaces could simplify complex music database queries and improve usability for non-technical users.

The original implementation used a MySQL-trained model from Huggingface to generate SQL directly from the user query. However, as queries became more complex, the model occasionally produced unreliable or invalid SQL. To improve reliability, I redesigned the architecture so the LLM interprets the question and returns a structured JSON response instead. This JSON is generated using a detailed 3,000-token system prompt combined with the user query, and is then used by the application to safely construct the final MySQL query.

The project was initially built using a locally hosted Ollama model running on my home PC, but has since been migrated to Google AI Studio using the Gemini 2.5 Flash Lite model.

Dante FAQ RAG Database

I wanted to explore how Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures could improve navigation of AV-over-IP technical documentation through semantic search and contextual retrieval. Using existing Dante FAQ content and LangChain libraries, I created chunked document datasets and generated embedding vector tables to support similarity-based search.

I then developed a web-based interface that allows users to submit natural language questions. The application compares each query against the embedding vectors to identify the most relevant document chunks, which are added to the prompt context alongside the user’s question before being sent to the LLM.

The interface not only generates an answer, but also displays the highest-ranking document chunks used to produce the response, providing transparency into how the answer was generated.

Again, this now runs on Google AI Studio having moved over from locally hosted Ollama for development.

Website Products

Music Database website

Need chart information for a pub music round?

I have created and maintain a music database website at uksongsearch.com to record and search all UK hits since 1952. The search terms are designed to make it easy to find songs for connection or stats rounds, e.g. “All hits with the word ‘Crazy’ in the title” or “All hits that reached number 5 in the UK”.

Creating this has given me in-depth experience with PHP, JavaScript, and MySQL.

Web-Based Dante Controller

At Audinate (the company behind Dante technology) I was the Product Manager for Dante AV.

Control and orchestration of AV platforms is important, and as Audinate built Dante Director, I created an online version of Dante Controller to configure devices enrolled in Director.

It requires a Dante Director account and an API key, after which you can manage and route your enrolled Dante devices.

Online Music Quiz

A weekly online music quiz as part of Jon Kutner’s website.

I created an online music quiz engine that allowed participants to complete a 10-question quiz each week, with a league ranking system. I also created an admin backend for Jon to create the quizzes.

Unfortunately Jon passed away in the summer of 2025 and as a result this is no longer active.

Beyond Work

Server admin

I run an EC2 instance on Ubuntu to host websites and email for friends and family.

Websites are either WordPress-based or bespoke, using Apache2.

Email is hosted using postfix/dovecot, with spamassassin, DKIM, and fail2ban to protect the server and provide a high mail server reputation.

Theatre Sound Technician

Every year I handle sound for the Chester Gang Show. This uses a Behringer X32 desk and all 40 channels for radio mics, stage mics, band, and SFX. Dante comes in very handy for making this all come together!

I also handle sound for the Cheshire Chamboree, which takes place every four years, with the next one in summer 2026.

Badminton

You may not know it to look at me, but I am a member of 2 badminton clubs around Ely.

I try to play every Wednesday and Thursday evening, when I’m not participating in a pub quiz!
